In order to deal with a backlog of applications and escalating processing delays, Canada drastically increased the number of new citizens at the start of 2022.
More than 95,000 persons became citizens in the first quarter of this year, compared to 136,604 in the entire year of 2021, according to official estimates. At the present rate, more than 380,000 persons might become citizens of Canada by 2022.
The number of citizenship ceremonies held by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has grown.

Early last month, the backlog of citizenship applications was at 399,325 applications.
The IRCC had 399,325 citizenship petitions in its inventory early last month, out of a backlog of 2.1 million applications for permanent and temporary residence and citizenship.
By upgrading and expanding its services for persons who wish to become Canadians, Canada plans to host even more citizenship ceremonies this year and welcome even more new Canadians.
In a statement, the IRCC said, "On November 26, 2020, we unveiled a new platform that made Canada one of the first countries in the world to provide citizenship testing online." "In April 2020, IRCC reacted fast to COVID-19 constraints by conducting virtual ceremonies." We are now able to invite more individuals to examinations and ceremonies as a result of these procedures than we were able to do before the outbreak."
As of April 29, the IRCC had 530,269 persons waiting for their permanent residency applications to be accepted in its backlog, and 1,200,791 people waiting for temporary residence applications.

The naturalization ceremony is the final stage in the process of becoming a citizen of Canada. During the ceremony, participants take the Oath of Citizenship, which is delivered by a citizenship judge, and embrace the privileges and duties of citizenship.

Although similar ceremonies have been performed in Canada since 1947, the Oath of Citizenship was only modified in June of last year to acknowledge Indigenous peoples' inherent and treaty rights.
During the epidemic, Canada began accepting online applications from select customers seeking to apply for citizenship, get evidence of citizenship, or check for citizenship records. The Citizenship Application Tracker was established in May 2021 to keep clients informed about the status of their citizenship applications and any needed next actions.
Since the debut of IRCC's new online testing platform in November 2020 through April 30, 2022, about 310,000 people have been able to take the citizenship exam, allowing Canada to welcome more people quicker.

Almost 14,000 ceremonies were held on the virtual platform in the two years that concluded on April 30 this year. Approximately 3,000 candidates are invited to citizenship ceremonies each week by the IRCC.
